Pick Fair Trade Holiday!

Tibet Collection staff just returned from our last tradeshow of the season, Natural Products Expo East, located in the Boston Convention Center. Over 21,000 natural foods industry members snacked a lot on the newest yummy natural foods treats, tasted all the new gummy vitamins, and sampled lots of lip balm from the over 1500 booths. Tibet Collection's booth #1420, positioned at the epicenter of the tradeshow where 'Health & Beauty' meets 'Natural Living', enjoyed good traffic. Our Fair Trade Holiday line was chosen & featured in the 'Saturday's Editor's Picks' on the official show blog, the Natural Foods Merchandiser! We were excited to see our old friends and customers as well as make more contacts in the growing natural food market. We also met with some of our Reps Ed Christian (Miami Beach) and Cherron Perry-Thomas (PA) Now we are on to the next big things: Shipping orders - our warehouse is jammed with product, and we are shipping out as fast as we can enter addresses- and planning for our new catalog. (Drum roll...) 2010 is our 20th anniversary! Look for more celebratory blogs and announcements. Until next time, happy travels!

Tibet Collection Products Embody ‘Hybrid Sustainablity’ Trend at NYIGF®

If one trend stands out at the NYIGF® it would be the ‘Hybrid Sustainability’ model of combining two or more sustainable or green technology applications into one product. Tibet Collection’s exclusive Do-It-Yourself Sustainable Lokta Paper Making Kit, included in the Jan 2009 Sustainable display, is a fun way to explore green thinking. The kit has step-by-step instructions for constructing a note card-size paper-making screen, and teaches traditional paper making techniques with sustainably harvested Lokta fibers. The student can add ingredients such as flower petals for a unique take on a traditional craft. This item is produced by a women-run artisan business. The Sustainable exhibit, packed with exciting product, is chosen from three categories of juried products submitted by exhibitors:
‘Green’ Products:
• Products that are manufactured or constructed with only recycled, recyclable and/or sustainable materials.

Environmentally-friendly Production Processes:
• Manufacturers who are using alternative sources of energy in production, including wind, sun, and alternative fuels.

Socially-responsible business practices:

• Products produced by indigenous peoples, creating viable, sustainable trades and markets in poverty-stricken and needy communities worldwide
• Manufacturers who donate percentages of their sales to not-for-profit organizations.

The Do-It-Yourself Sustainable Lokta Paper Making Kit is a great example of this growing ‘Hybrid Sustainabilty’ trend. The kit features ‘Green’ sustainable Lokta paper, with a Do-It-Yourself re-purposed wood frame that is made by a fair trade women-run business. As a founding member of Fair Trade Federation, Tibet Collection is a socially-responsible business. Interest and sales in Tibet Collection’s Sustainable Display line continue to grow as more retailers opt for ‘Green’ and Socially-responsible display alternatives.

Buyers are excited about the Sustainable Lokta Jewelry Spinners as well as the Necklace, Earring and Bracelet stands. The line also features a 12 piece Display Cube/Tray set and Sustainable display for Notecards and Fair Trade Holiday. The Sustainable Lokta line is also recyclable. When the products finally wear out, they can go into the cardboard bin, thus reducing landfill.

NYIGF Fair Trade Followup

The New York International Gift Fair® is a moment where many of the Fair Trade Federation members get a chance to come together. The August Gift Fair is a crucial time for members to share thoughts, provide insight, and educate members on various issues.

One of the key discussions was coming up with ideas on how to promote the Trade Organization and distinguish Fair Trade products from other products at the gift show. The possibility of an exclusively Fair Trade section of the show has been brought up many times by both the members and management of the show itself. Many members felt the consolidation of the members at the California Gift Show was a great success and believe that we could bring over that energy to the biggest show of the year.

There seems to be a natural coagulation of FTF members growing in the Handmade section, and of course Tibet Collection would love to stay in sacred Booth #5000 that we have held for almost 20 years.

It felt as if there was a camaraderie at the FTF meeting and at dinner. The Fair Trade Federation's identity and Mission are clearly defined and it feels as if the organization is making tremendous progress towards the purpose of the Organization. The Fair Trade Federation is providing networking and support for members, and reinforcing ideals and faith in our screening process for the customers and prospective customers of Fair Trade products.

There has been talk about an exclusive Fair Trade section at the upcoming Chicago Show so stay tuned!

Many prospective members have committed to coming on board at this show and we hope the organization can grow and thrive into the 4th quarter and beyond.
